Every year on November 15, I Love to Write Day invites students of all ages to slow down, pick up a pencil, and let their ideas take shape on a blank page. More than an academic skill, writing is a lifelong tool for self-expression, creativity, and confident communication. Whether your child already loves to write or needs a little encouragement, these small daily practices at home can make a big difference in how they see themselves as writers.

Here are a few meaningful ways you can make writing exciting at home:
Start with Small Prompts. Invite your child to write things that connect to their daily lives, even if it's as simple as a grocery list, a thank-you note, or an invitation for a playdate.
Make Writing Collaborative. Write alongside your child and show them what you've written, or create a back-and-forth story where you each write one sentence until the story is complete. This playful activity helps children see storytelling as fun rather than intimidating. When the adults in their lives model creativity, kids feel more inspired to participate and share.
Start a Feel-Good Journal. Journaling builds emotional awareness and writing fluency. Give your child a notebook for daily or weekly reflections, and encourage them to write a few lines about something they're proud of, curious about, or grateful for.
Turn Reading into Writing. After reading a favorite book or a new chapter, ask your child to rewrite or invent a new scene. By interacting with existing stories in this way, children can strengthen comprehension and creativity while learning how to build stories of their own.
Celebrate Their Writing. Display your child's work at home, share it with family, or let them read it aloud. As their confidence grows, so will their skill and passion for writing.
