This week is National Children's Book Week, and we’re celebrating the magic of stories to open new worlds for children. Founded in 1919, Children's Book Week celebrates the life-changing potential of books and literacy for our youngest minds. This year's slogan, "An Ocean of Stories," reminds us that every great story, like a wave, carries readers to new ideas and dreams. Every student—no matter their age—deserves to experience the joy, power, and growth of reading.
📚 Why Books Matter
Reading does more than build critical thinking, focus and communication. When children improve their literacy and read habitually, especially at a young age, they embark on a pathway to success. From learning their first words to crafting their own essays, a child's growth is continuously tied to reading. Students who read bring new ideas into class discussions, ask deeper questions, and show up ready to learn with curiosity and confidence.
For young readers, books serve as both mirrors and windows, reflecting and revealing who they are while opening doors to worlds beyond their imaginings. Whether a story takes place in a faraway land or in their own hometown, reading helps children make sense of their experiences, discover new perspectives, and find their voices.
🌟 Celebrate Reading Together
Children's Book Week is the perfect time to nurture a love of stories at home. Here are a few simple ways parents can make the most of this special week:
Let your child choose what to read. Whether it's a tale of adventure or a book full of jokes, their choices reflect their curiosity—what they're eager to explore!
Make reading interactive. Pause and ask questions: What surprised you? How would you solve this problem? What do you want to ask the character? How does this story relate to your life or the world around us? These conversations build comprehension and empathy.
Bring the story to life. Create a bookmark, sketch an image, act out a scene, or invent a new ending. Turn reading into an activity to help ideas stick.
Share the joy. Encourage your child to recommend books to their siblings, grandparents, or friends—or to read together with them. A social aspect makes reading more exciting!
