First-Day Jitters: Help Your Child Start the School Year with Confidence

The night before the first day of school reveals just how much your child has grown, as well as just how much they still need you. Whether your child is starting kindergarten or their junior year of high school, first-day nerves are real, and almost universal. The question isn't how to eliminate them, but how to help your child walk through the door with confidence, despite their fears or apprehensions.
Name the Feeling
Don't wait for your child to bring up anxiety. Bring it up yourself, casually and without alarm: "Are you feeling nervous about tomorrow? That makes a lot of sense." Naming the feeling before it becomes overwhelming tends to reduce its power. It also signals that whatever they're feeling is normal, and that you're a safe person to talk to about it.
What's Within Control

Anxiety tends to fixate on the unknown. Redirect your child's attention toward the things they can control — having their backpack ready, knowing their schedule, and getting a good night's sleep. Preparation is one of the most effective antidotes to first-day nerves because it replaces helplessness with agency.
Keep the Morning Calm
The tone of the morning before school sets the tone for the day. Aim for calm over rushed. Wake up a little earlier, eat a real breakfast together, and ensure your child has a few minutes to breathe before heading out the door.
First-day nerves almost always fade within the first week. What remains is the confidence a student builds by showing up anyway, and knowing their family believes in them.
At ILMS, we support students academically and help them build the confidence that carries them through every school year. Contact us at (708) 581-8617 or ilms_office@ilmstutor.com to learn more, or book your free initial consultation today!
