What Two Teachers Built — A Tutoring Center Unlike Any Other

When veteran teachers Maliha Khan and Faten Abdallah opened a tutoring center in Rockford, they weren't just starting a business. They were solving a problem they had observed firsthand for years: students falling through the cracks because the classroom couldn't always meet their individual needs.
For National Small Business Week, we're diving into the origins of the Institute of Languages, Mathematics, and Sciences (ILMS). Learn what really sets us apart!
Built by educators, not entrepreneurs
Most tutoring companies are built around a business model, but ILMS was built around a belief that every student, regardless of grade level, background, or learning style, deserves instruction that meets them where they are. Maliha and Faten came to this belief through years of teaching in Rockford classrooms, watching students spare no effort, and understanding exactly what kind of support would have made a difference. As Faten says, “We’re so glad we can help fill some gaps in our City by providing tutoring services for all ages and backgrounds.”
Experienced teachers who know about learning

Years in the classroom teach you things about learning that no training manual covers. They teach you that a student who seems disengaged is often a student who doesn't yet believe they can succeed. They teach you that the way a concept is explained matters as much as the concept itself. They teach you that building trust with a student — really earning it — is they key to making instruction stick.
Classroom experience also teaches you where the gaps are. Our experienced tutors know which skills tend to unravel in middle school, where high schoolers most commonly lose confidence in math, and what early elementary struggles tend to look like years later if left unaddressed. This institutional knowledge shapes everything about how ILMS operates, from the way we approach a struggling student to the way we communicate with parents and families!
Individualized instruction changes outcomes
Classroom teachers work extraordinarily hard, but they are responsible for an entire room of students with different needs and learning styles. Individualized tutoring exists to do what the classroom structurally cannot: slow down, zoom in, and focus entirely on one student at a time.
ILMS tutors follow ISBE standards while tailoring sessions to each student's specific needs. That means your child won't sit through material they've already mastered or rush past a concept they haven't fully grasped. At ILMS, they'll get exactly what they need, at exactly the right pace.

Choosing local matters
When you choose ILMS, you're choosing a small business founded by two women who have spent their careers investing in Rockford students. We're part of this community, and your child's success is personal to us in a way that many tutoring chains simply can't replicate.
This National Small Business Week, we're grateful for every family that has trusted us with their student. If you're considering tutoring for your child, we'd love to talk. Contact us at (708) 581-8617 or ilms_office@ilmstutor.com, or book a free consultation today!
